The History of the Ben Nevis and Fort William meteorological observatories
Saturday 3rd October 2020 | 10.30am
Dr Simon Naylor is a historical geographer and historian of science at the University of Glasgow. In 2019 he was the National Library of Scotland’s Graham Brown Research Fellow. He used the Fellowship to research the history of Scotland’s high-level meteorological observatory on Ben Nevis and its sister station at Fort William. Simon will talk about the contributions that the observatory made to Victorian and Edwardian weather studies. He will argue that the observatories’ precarious finances prompted difficult questions about the public value of science and whether or not Scottish science got overlooked by London-centric scientific establishments.
