With continued focus on the role of the military around the world, we have launched our 2013 programme of free winter lectures.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has a unique worldwide role and cares for cemeteries which are the final resting place of millions of servicemen killed in battle. The first lecture of the year will kick-off with a talk that links Edinburgh to worldwide war graves, plus some fascinating revelations about their history and upkeep.
Speaking about the lecture, Lt Gen Sir Alistair Irwin KCB, CBE comments: “In WW1 and WW2 there were 1.7 million Commonwealth casualties including over 12,000 Royal Scots. The information held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is of great value to anyone researching history of battles or a personal family history.”
This popular lecture series will continue into the year with an overview of the new Forth Crossing and a historic talk on the Propaganda in the Films of the Third Reich – including an eye-opening German version of the Titanic.

Record-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont and rugby legend Andy Irvine will entertain guests and raise money for The Soldiers’ Charity on 30 November at our annual St Andrew’s Night Dinner.
The black-tie dinner will be hosted by Austin Lafferty, president of the Law Society of Scotland.
This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an evening of entertainment while raising money for a very worthy cause. The Soldiers’ Charity gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. Soldiers risk so much for us, but for them, it’s just doing their job. In return, the charity provides financial assistance when they are in real need.
The Soldiers Charity has seen a 30% rise over the past two years in applications from soldiers who have taken part in previous and current conflicts and we currently raise £7 million a year to meet this need. As a result of Current Operations it is anticipated that the requests for assistance will rise significantly in the coming years.
Tickets cost £55 each / £500 for a table of ten. To book or to find out more, please call 0131 556 4270.

Part of an article from Saturday 17th December 2011 , by Tom Mullen After arriving on Friday evening, my partner and I made our way to our accommodation for the weekend, the Royal Scots Club. Situated within one of Edinburgh’s finest Georgian streets, the private member’s club offersthe charm of a country house hotel with a cosy club atmosphere. You don’t have to be a member to stay here –rooms can be booked in the usual way – but there is a membership element that includes a friendlycontingent of ex-military gentlemen, who are only too happy to stop for a friendly chat. Our room here was incredibly comfortable. It featured all the mod-cons amid a red-carpeted and warm setting, with a huge bed providing the perfect retreat for a cosy winter snooze. Downstairs, the restaurant is equally cosy, featuring photos and artwork dedicated to the club’s namesake – the Royal Scots regiment. The regiment is one of the oldest and most senior infantry regiments in the British Army, having been created in 1633 during the reign ofCharles I of Scotland. It existed until 2006, when it amalgamated with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers tobecome the Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion of the newly-formed Royal Regiment of Scotland. The club is frequented by many veterans. But away from the history and back to the food. Simply delicious. The menu offered to us didn’t boast a hugeamount of choice – only five or six main courses in fact – but what it lacked in numbers it certainly made up for in taste. I tried the Scottish salmon starter and then steak, cooked rare with crunchy vegetables, while my partner was blown away by the goats’ cheese tart followed by a hearty chicken roast. We finished with an excellent cheese board. The following evening we enjoyed lamb, cooked to perfection, and a chicken fillet dish, before sharing a delicious Edinburgh fog pudding, which I would describe as a cross between a mouse and a cheesecake. The service here is just as charming as the menu, and the speed at which such good food was served is something quite remarkable. The red wine was also magnificent. The pdf of the full article can be found here.

Some highlights from our recent metion.
“Perched on one of Edinburgh’s finest Georgian streets, the Royal Scots Club feels far more cosy than the ubiquitous mega-hotels which seem to litter so many cities.
“Staff were friendly and helpful .. the food was excellent … the dining room was immaculate…. Breakfast was another feast, all made with the finest Scottish fare.”

Heather and Archie Motion tied the knot here at The Club in April 2011, and the Evening News fell in love with their story! A link to the online article can be found here.
It’s quite common to find something on a bus – a forgotten shopping bag, loose coins, a newspaper.
But newlyweds Archie and Heather Motion found something else – each other.
Archie – who met Heather when they were both working as bus drivers for the Edinburgh Bus Tours – admits it took him a while to put the wheels of their romance in motion.
Craigmillar’s Archie, 33, was unaware that Heather, 26, nee McCourt, carried a torch for him as they steered tourists around the city, but something rang a bell as the season came to an end.
The pair tied the knot at St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church in George Street, before celebrating at the Royal Scots Club with family and friends.
Next stop was a honeymoon in New York and Mexico.

A recent article from the P&J was published and can be found online here.
I had fabns.
Even pulling a suitcase, it is not too far a walk frulous accommodation at the Royal Scots Club in Abercromby Place.
Housed in a stunning Georgian building in Edinburgh’s New Town, now one of UNESCO’s designated World Heritage sites, it overlooks Queen Street Gardeom the train and bus stations.
It is a private members’ club but offers high quality, reasonably priced accommodation and meals to members and non-members alike.
It was founded as a memorial club to more than 11,000 Royal Scots who lost their lives in the Great War.
The walls in the public rooms are adorned with references to the regiment and those who served – one fascinating photograph of sturdy lads has the caption: 17th Battalion Royal Scots tug of war team winners, divisional championship, Flanders 1919.
The faces staring out from the photograph serve as a sharp reminder of those who endured so much on those muddy, bloody battlefields.
Designed as an oasis of calm for men of all ranks, the club still has a quiet, upmarket air and, apart from a no jeans at dinner rule, is pretty relaxed.

Following our recent coverage, The Drum picked up that The Aberdeen P&J are definitely fans of The Club!
Regular readers of the Press and Journal's Saturday supplement, Your Life, must have had a double take this weekend when a splash featuring the redoubtable Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh induced a sense of deja vu.
For a week last Saturday , the Aberdeen daily featured the Abercromby Place club in the two-page Eating Out section of thesupplement –complete with five photographs plus lavish illustrations of dishes from its cuisine. The meal earned a 28 out of 30 mark.
This Saturday, the Royal Scots Club again appeared in Your Life – in a two-page Travel Scotland focus, and this time it dominated one page with two large pictures from the previous week repeated and further menu illustrations.

From The Daily Record - Saturday 17th September 2011 The Royal Scots Regiment have aproud history of valour on thebattlefield stretching backhundreds of years – so, as one oflife’s natural civilians, it was withtrepidation that I arrived at theirclub for the weekend. But I was soon put at ease by thewarm welcome my wife Trish and Ireceived as we entered the stunningneo-classical building in AbercrombyPlace in Edinburgh’s New Town. The receptionist was friendlinessitself as she showed us where topark – and avoid the bands of trafficwardens who had eyed our car as weputtered to a halt outside. And she soon had us installed inour room, which oozed character, with high ceilings, huge Georgianwindows and period furniture. The club was founded in memoryof the 11,000 Royal Scots killed inWorld War 1.And, along with pictures of battlesfought in by the regiment and othermemorabilia, that is what gives it itsgenuine atmosphere. It’s a welcome change from theblandness of many modern hotels. With dinner being served shortlyafter we arrived, it was time todecide on what to wear for ourappearance in the dining room. The Royal Scots Club, whichrecently completed a £1.5millionrefurbishment and also an extension, has a smart dress code that involvesthe wearing of a tie – with jeansbeing frowned on.Luckily for me – owner of just twokipper ties from the 80s – the rule isrelaxed at the weekend. But all the dressing up was worth itas we were served up a trulydelicious meal and lashings of wine. After a great night’s sleep, it wastime, once again, to visit the diningroom – on this occasion for a full-onScottish breakfast. There washealthy stuff there too – freshfruit, cereals and fruit juices. So, full to the gunnels, Iwaddled after Trish as weheaded out to see the sights –all in walking distance as theclub is just a few hundred yardsfrom Princes Street.Adopting a see-a-sight/havea-coffee policy, we cut aswathe through the city, bagging the National Museumof Scotland, the NationalPortrait Gallery, The Royal Mile– and a dizzying array of shops. And it was nice to be able tostroll back in the evening toour sumptuous rooms.By the time we left, I feltready for anything – althoughI’m not expecting my call-uppapers anytime soon.A full pdf of the article can be found here.

Review of The Royal Scots Club's Dining room

We are delighted with this recent review of The Club's dining room, which featured in The Aberdeen Press & Journal on Saturday 15th October. Highlights of the write-up:
The room, overlooking Queen Street Gardens, is one of the finest rooms in Edinburgh, filled with classical Georgian features such as huge, ornate-carved door frames and splendid windows, with illuminated glass cabinets filled with sparkling regimental silverware.
Waiting staff, wearing tartan waistcoats, are friendly and efficient, and every task is carried out with a sense of cheerful purpose.
To start I ordered a warm goats cheese salad while my companion opted for smoked salmon. My starter was superb. The goats cheese, just starting to melt, was served on a thick oatcake with a good dollop of caramelised tangy red onion chutney and a spicy rocket salad. Delicious. The salmon, served with lots of thickly-buttered brown bread, lemon and freshly-cracked pepper had a delicious smoky flavour and a nice, flaky texture which suggested it had come from a fish merchant rather than a packet.
For the main course, the vegetarian option of mushroom ravioli with pesto cream sauce took my friend’s fancy while the venison steak with red currant sauce was too hard for me to resist. My steak, two fine cuts of venison, was nicely pink and tender without being bloody. It came with a generous portion of potatoes and a good selection of fresh vegetables.

The ravioli was a hit as the parcels of pasta were a good size and filled with tender mushrooms. The pesto/mushroom combination of flavours worked surprisingly well.
I tucked into a gorgeous home-made ice-cream terrine which had layers of different flavoured ice creams including a wonderful toffee, all served with colourful autumnal fruits.
My companion chose cheese and biscuits and received a nice selection of Scottish and continental cheeses including a very moreish, tangy blue.
For those in the mood for a special-occasion dinner, at an everyday price, the Royal Scots Club is spot on. A pdf version of the article can be found here, and a link to the online version of the article here.

Small businesses set for Club class in central Edinburgh

Small businesses in Edinburgh are being offered accommodation to help them rise through the ranks - serviced offices in a military-inspired members' club in one of Edinburgh's finest streets.
As the latest development in its £1.5 million renovation and expansion programme, the Royal Scots Club has created serviced offices, capable of up to 12 desks, to be let out to small outside businesses within Edinbrugh.
Tenants will have reception facilities, direct dial telephones, broadband internet access and use of the Club's lounge and bar. They will also have access to meeting room and conference facilities. If they become members they will be able to use the Dining Room, Members Lounge & Library and have access to over 200 reciprocal Clubs worldwide.
"Our renovation programme has not only created even more splendid premises and services for members and guests but also given us extra space ideally suited for people working in small businesses or as sole traders," said Club Manager Adrian Hayes.
"The offices are fully serviced and flexible, and come with the bonus of a prime, prestigious address. Very few serviced offices can offer the facilities of overnight accommodation, bars and dining rooms and meeting facilities all conveniently located on one site"
For more information call Adrian Hayes at the Royal Scots Club on 0131-556 4270 or email manager@royalscotsclub.com

The historic Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh has completed a £1.5 million refurbishment and extension programme which features the addition of state-of-the-art conference and function facilities.
Then refurbishment project, which took two and a half years from planning to completion, includes the creation of a new bar and lounge area for the existing Hepburn Suite, the installation of a passenger lift to connect the Club's six floors and the newly developed Princess Royal Suite.
Situated in Abercromby Place, one Edinburghs finest Georgian streets, the Royal Scots Club was founded as a War Memorial Club in memory of the 11,000 Royal Scots killed in the First World War.
The Royal Scots Club is a members' club offering overnight accommodation, dining facilities, conference and business meeting rooms, and a setting for special events such as weddings. Membership is open to anyone over 18 and corporate membership is encouraged. No armed forces connection is required and the Club has some 1,950 members from all walks of life.
The jewel in its crown is the Princess Royal Suite, opened earlier this year by HRH Princess Anne, the Club's Patron. It can seat 200 theatre style and 160 for dinner.
The Royal Scots Club has 23 individually designed en-suite bedrooms, some with scenic views to Fife or overlooking private gardens.
